Great Ape Sanctuaries
AFRICA is home to all gorillas, chimpanzees and bonobos. In 13 countries 22 organizations work to help apes. Collectively they are members of the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA). Ape Action Africa (Cameroon)
A refuge for gorillas, chimpanzees, and diverse monkey species.

A large reserve that rescues chimpanzees from all over the world.
Chimpanzee Eden (South Africa).
The Jane Goodall Institute South Africa’s sanctuary for rescued chimps.
Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Project (Gambia).
A sanctuary for more than 100 chimpanzees on islands in the River Gambia.
Colobus Conservation (Kenya).
A center that treats and releases injured colobus, vervet, and Sykes’ monkeys.
Drill Ranch (Nigeria).
A refuge for more than 500 drills, an extremely endangered monkey.
A home for chimpanzees and a leader in reintroducing chimps to the wild.
J.A.C.K. (Jeunes Animaux Confisques au Katanga) (D.R. Congo).
An organization in Southern DRC that rescues chimps from the wildlife trade.
Lilongwe Wildlife Centre (Malawi).
A center that rescues baboons, vervet monkeys, and many other species.
Limbe Wildlife Centre (Cameroon).
A sanctuary for gorillas, chimpanzees, and many monkey species.
Lola ya Bonobo (D.R. Congo).
In Western DRC, the world’s only rehabilitation center for bonobos.
Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary (Uganda).
An island home in Lake Victoria for chimpanzees.
Projet Gorille Fernan-Vaz (Gabon).
A sanctuary that provides a future for gorilla victims of the bushmeat trade.
Projet Protection des Gorilles-Congo (Congo).
A project that aims to reduce the trafficking of baby gorillas.
Projet Protection des Gorilles-Gabon (Gabon).
A project aiming to stop the rapid decline in gorilla populations.
Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue (IDA Africa) (Cameroon).
A center that rescues and cares for chimps in need.
Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary (Kenya).
A lifelong home for orphaned and abused chimpanzees.
Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary (Sierra Leone). A rehabilitation center for orphaned and confiscated chimps.
Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Centre (Congo).
The Jane Goodall Institute’s center for confiscated chimps and mandrills.
BORNEO & SUMATRA
Unfortunately no alliance serves the needs of all the sanctuary and rescue efforts across the range of Bornean and Sumatran orangutans. Orangutan Outreach (Red Apes) based in the USA does work with most to coordinate support. Below are the 13 organizations they connect to, learn more at RedApes.org
